Puerto Penesco, Chola Bay and Jesus

My family moved to Phoenix Arizona when I was twelve years old. Soon thereafter my Dad, my brother Dirk and I went to Cholla Bay, Puerto Penesco, or Rocky Point in Sonora Mexico. This is at the very northern end of the gulf of Baja California on the mainland side. We took our boat, the Lucky Lady to go fishing. I had never been to Mexico before. The tide would go over a mile out, so the local Mexicans had built cars on stilts with engines way up in the air to drive out pulling your trailer to pick you up, or take your boat out, since the water was so shallow. When you were ready to be picked up you would get on the radio and call a Mexican fellow named Jesus. It was my job to call Jesus. I felt kind of funny, "Lucky Lady calling Jesus, please pick us up Jesus." The driver would be paid a couple of dollars and that is how they earned their living. Driving to Puerto Penesco I saw houses built out of cardboard. Entire families were living in these cardboard shacks in the middle of the desert. It was like nothing I had seen before. One time Dirk and I spotted a stream of water shoot five feet high out of the mud flat. We ran over and dug up a huge clam. His shell is still in my office.

Dad- Did you know it was Puerto Penasco where Billy and I first fell in love? It was February of 2002 and because of the Winter Olympics in SLC BYU had a week off of school. As you my recall, BYU NEVER EVER has vacations except for Christmas break. The mom travel gene in me ignited with anticipation and I planned a week-long trip to Puerto Penasco for my roommates and some guy friends we knew. Billy just happened to be one of them. On the first day, on the drive down, my crush on him hit like a ton of bricks. We became inseparable from that day on. He told me I reminded him of Scott and I thought he had a crush on Charlotte. Well... I guess he didn't. The next year on Valentines day under the same Puerto Penasco twilight he asked me to marry him. Now how about that! We are hoping to go back there for our five year anniversary.

This blog is like the large plates of Eric Olsen! I guess children are egotistical and don't realize how much of their parents life is unknown.

Your writing is great, keep it up.

I remember in eight grade that when I encountered my first "Jesus" I was extremely insensitive. Maybe it was the cumalitive effects of having such a hard to comprehend name. Jeremiah Jesus Rangal was in the lab group next to me and I discovered his middle name because I was an office aid.

I asked him in front of many other kids if his name was really Jeremiah GEEESUZ. He looked at me over the bullfrog and said, "yeah, so?"

I said, "I guess it does beat 'was a bullfrog, huh?'"

But he didn't get it.
